Three degrees of separation
I got this email yesterday from my friend: ...for the past several years, my primary care provider has been a nurse practitioner named Barbara White, who practiced within the offices of Dr. Marie Amos Dobyns. Ms. White is no longer with the practice, so today I saw Dr. Dobyns... who happened to mention, when talking about her summer, that she had spent some time traveling with her sister, a recording artist named... Tori Amos. My doctor is Tori's sister. She says this current tour is amazing, by the way.How weird (and cool) is that? P.S. Toripalooza 2007 begins a month from tomorrow! Yay! Vivid dreams
I've had strange dreams the last couple nights. Last night, I dreamed that our cat Squeaker got shot into space on a satellite as part of some scientific experiment. It was a huge honor that he had been chosen, and he made it back to Earth safely. Two nights ago, I dreamed that I was swimming in the ocean and got bitten on the leg by a sea lamprey. I was surprised that it didn't hurt that much and it didn't bleed too badly...in fact, I thought the circular wound looked kind of cool. *shrug* Current Mood: odd | | Sunday, September 23rd, 2007 | | 9:31 pm |
Ani DiFranco 9.21.07
Last Friday, Lee and I saw Ani DiFranco in concert at the State Theater. I've probably been to ten or so Ani concerts by now, and this was my favorite in a long time, if not ever. ( Why? )I still plan to update on the Austin City Limits Music Festival, which was Sept. 14-16. Current Mood: pleased | | Monday, September 10th, 2007 | | 10:01 am |
Her womb is so polluted...
Lee and I met a friend for drinks last Friday night at a very bizarre place called Restaurant Miami. It's supposed to be just like Miami in the 80's, or something. I dare you to check out the web site and see how many spelling errors you can find. That should give you a good feel for this place. It's totally half-assed, and utterly amazing. And it was packed with people who apparently take it very seriously and think it's the most awesome place ever. The fact that the street it front of it completely ripped up right now due to construction is only too fitting. They have a menu of specialty drinks that are all named after lines of dialogue from Scarface. I ordered the Her Womb Is So Polluted. It was surprisingly refreshing. My Tori Amos triumvirate is complete!
It's official...I'll be seeing three Tori Amos shows this November: Milwaukee, Chicago, and Minneapolis! I just bought the Minneapolis tickets this morning, and the seats are seventh row center! Mind you, I went to my first Tori show thirteen years ago. I have always wanted to be in the first ten rows somewhere. While I usually get pretty good seats, it hadn't happened until now. So I'm excited. I'm also excited that I will be spending one of these evenings in the company of the lovely and talented inqueery. It'll be nice to get to know you better. Oh, and for those of you who were wondering...these will be shows #15, 16, and 17. Current Mood: thrilled | | Tuesday, August 7th, 2007 | | 10:59 am |
RIPPED FROM THE HEADLINES (of stupidity)
From today's Star Tribune: Police seek "professionals" who removed St. Paul man's testiclesA St. Paul man, complaining of chronic pain, wanted to have his testicles removed. When conventional medical staff refused to do the job, he hired other "professionals" to take off his testicles.
Two or three people operated on the man a couple weeks ago at his home. He was unconscious during the surgery, and when he work up, his testicles had been removed.
And the "professionals" were gone. And here's the highlight of the article for me... Since then, St. Paul police have been looking for the people behind the surgery. (They) searched the home on July 28, looking for a list of items including blood, medical instruments, fingerprints, documents discussing medical procedures, computers, and testicles. Yikes! The I-35W bridge over the Mississippi River here in Minneapolis collapsed during this afternoon's rush hour. I hope that nobody I know was hurt. Current Mood: shocked | | Friday, July 20th, 2007 | | 9:59 am |
Gorgeous Friday
I biked to work today for the first time this year. The weather conditions were perfect. It's only 67 degrees right now, and I'm guessing it was closer to 60 when I set out. The trip only took me about 20 minutes. I wish I could do this more often, but my job often requires me to have a car available during the day. Today, however, I have absolutely nothing on my calendar, and I'm almost completely caught up with all of my charting. This is going to be a loooooong day. I predict much wasting of time online. Tonight, we are going to sing along with our favorite cabaret singer, Erin Schwab, at Jitters. I have a rare Saturday off from my part-time job tomorrow, and at some point we'll be doing something with Lee's mom. Have a great Friday, everyone! A date with Ani
I just bought tickets for the Ani DiFranco concert at the State Theater on September 21. Actually, I went a little crazy. I got online right at 10:00 when they went on sale and was offered main floor, row V. Decent...but not fantastic for buying them the minute they went on sale. Do I give them up and search again? So I bought them, but just out of curiosity, I kept searching. The next two offers were both in the balcony, but attempt #4 gave me seats in row M. So, yeah...I bought those two. So now I need to sell two extra tickets. I guess my hope would be to sell them directly to a friend for face value. I don't need to make a profit on them, and I've always gotten irritated when non-music fans snatch up good tickets and then auction them off on eBay. But I guess I would consider it if I can't find anyone who really wants them. So, Minneapolitans...take note. Good seats in row V, the total cost would be $102.97. Weekend update, and oh hey look at that corpse in the lake...
I just found out that a body was found this morning in the lake less than a mile from my house. Yikes.I feel that it would be crass to follow that news up with a regular ol' update of my weekend. But classy is not my middle name, so... Good weekend. I celebrated on Friday night with a co-worker who is leaving my department to manage another. I drank steadily from 5:00 until about 10:00, which is unusual for me. I felt pretty crappy on Saturday morning, and I *almost* called in sick to work at my part-time job. I ended up falling asleep on the couch, woke up around the time that I was supposed to be there, and felt a million times better. So I was just late instead of absent. On Saturday night, Lee and I saw Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. It was alright. Of all the movies, I think the only one that I thoroughly enjoyed was the fourth. None of the rest have come even close to doing the books justice, and it's hard for me not to compare them that way. Lee and I played tennis on Sunday. We tried to play actual games for the first time this summer, and he whooped me. I felt myself getting pissy, so I asked if we could go back to just hitting the ball back and forth. I don't know why things become so different the moment keeping score enters the picture, but...it does. Maybe next time I'll be able to still have fun even if I'm not winning. Steamy weekend in Minneapolis
I had a good weekend, despite the heat and high humidity. Worked as usual on Saturday afternoon at the Ordway, and then on Saturday evening Lee and I watched This Film Is Not Yet Rated. While it wasn't as compelling as some of the documentaries I've seen, it was interesting and the ending does pack a punch. Ironically, the film, which unravels some of the tangled web of influence behind the MPAA's ratings system, was co-produced by Red Envelope Entertainment, a subsidiary of Netflix. I squeezed in a bike ride on Sunday afternoon. I took a new route...38th Street to 23rd Avenue, up to 35th Street and over to Park Avenue. I took Park up to the 29th Street Greenway and followed that over to Lake Calhoun. One lap around Calhoun, and then back the way I came. It was a sweaty ride, and I was glistening about five minutes into it...but it was good to get the exercise. About half an hour after I got home, a round of severe thunderstorms rolled through and cooled things off quite a bit. Later that afternoon, Lee and I saw Knocked Up. I definitely recommend it. For the most part, it pulls off the balance of being simultaneously crass and charming. Charmingly crass? Anyway, I liked it a LOT better than The 40 Year Old Virgin. So there. And now it's Monday...blargh. Current Mood: calm | | Tuesday, June 26th, 2007 | | 9:58 am |
The tree reaper cometh
This morning after I got out of bed, I raised the blinds to a sight I had been dreading for some time. The big tree in front of our house had a bright orange ring of spray paint around it. Yep, the tree reaper struck yesterday, declaring that our tree has Dutch elm disease and will be cut down. Minneapolis has lost so many of its trees to Dutch elm disease. It has dramatically altered the appearance of many neighborhoods here. I'm not surprised that our tree is next to go, but I am disappointed. I will miss the shade, the privacy, and the critters that chose that tree as their home. Current Mood: pensive | | Thursday, June 14th, 2007 | | 1:25 pm |
Mad props and warm fuzzies

Oh no they didn't...
*sigh* Yes, they did. I've had my car for less than three months, and somebody has already bumped into it. I was shopping yesterday, came out of the store, and noticed that some paint has been scraped off the rear bumper on the left side. No note or anything. It's not too bad, but still it pisses me off. In other news...our house seems to be suffering from some kind of fly infestation. I noticed a bunch in the basement last night when I was doing laundry...throughout the evening, they migrated to the main floor and then upstairs to the bedroom. Between the time we headed upstairs to go to bed and the time we actually turned the lights out, I killed at least a dozen. Probably closer to fifteen. It's disgusting. I hope I got most of them and that it stops there. Where could these nasty things have hatched from? I'm afraid when I get home from work today that the walls will be completely covered or something. Gross. Current Mood: irritated | | Thursday, June 7th, 2007 | | 8:57 am |

Interesting only to vocabulary geeks and Scrabble lovers...
I just found out today that "popemobile" is in Webster's. It's a common noun, too. Definition: a type of vehicle used by religious and political leaders that is specially designed with a viewing platform and bulletproof glass. I saw the word today in a news article. Is anyone else amused by this? Granted, it was about the Pope. But this means that the Dalai Lama could have a popemobile. Or Hillary Clinton. Oh, that Pope...such a trendsetter. On Thursday morning, I have an appointment at the dentist. So here's my shocking confession...I like going to the dentist. I know, many of you will be scandalized. I didn't always like it. I used to hate it as a child, because my teeth were never clean to the satisfaction of the dentist. Actually, the orthodontist was worse. They used to grade their patients on a scale of 1-5. If I got a 4 or a 5, my mom would take me to Rax for a chocolate chip milkshake. Between 1 and 3 meant no shake. I very rarely got the shake. Remember those tabs they used to give out in elementary school that you would chew and then they would turn your teeth red in any spot where you had plaque that you hadn't brushed away? My teeth were red all over, no matter how hard I tried. I honestly had no idea what I was doing wrong, and I don't to this day. Even as recently as five or six years ago, I remember going to the dentist and being told that I was just a step or two away from having to get treated for periodontal disease. I remember the hygienist scraping so much that my gums would bleed. I never wanted to go back. Somewhere along the way, though, something changed. I started flossing, for one thing. And using mouthwash. Stuff that my parents, for all their emphasis on dental care, never really did or told me to do as a child. A couple years went by, and then I went to the dentist fearing the worst... ...and was told that my teeth were in fantastic shape. It was the quickest dental appointment I've ever had. I don't know if it's the praise that I failed to receive as a kid, but the part of me that loves to please grown-ups just loves being told that I was doing a good job. Yeah, it was as simple as that. The last time I went, the hygienist complained that I had hardly left anything for him to clean. Of course, another reason why I love going to the dentist might be the hygienist...the last time I was there, the hygienist was a young guy named Nate. Now, he wasn't really the type of guy that I am smitten by...too beefy and jocky for my taste. But if I have to have somebody's face inches away from my own for twenty minutes, it could be a lot worse. Plus, he had amazingly beautiful green eyes that I couldn't help staring into. No wonder I scheduled this appointment promptly at six months after the last. Current Mood: silly | | Saturday, May 26th, 2007 | | 11:40 am |
Why I love my part-time job
I'm here at work, listening to my iPod, drinking coffee, reading the newspaper, and slowly working through my email. It's like I'm having a Saturday morning at home...only I'm getting paid for it. :) All jobs should be like this. Before I die...
Has anyone ever seen the northern lights? I'm reading The Golden Compass right now, and I just thought...I'd like to see the northern lights before I die. I live in Minnesota, so I probably have a better chance than a lot of people. Current Mood: contemplative |
